The Beadhead Copper John nymph aka BH Copper John is a popular and versatile fly pattern used in fly fishing, particularly for targeting trout in both stillwater and flowing water environments. It was created by John Barr, a renowned fly tier and angler.
This fly is known for its effectiveness in imitating a wide range of aquatic insect larvae and nymphs, making it a reliable choice for anglers in various fishing conditions.

Key Characteristics of the Beadhead Copper John:
Beadhead: One of the distinguishing features of the Copper John is its beadhead. This metallic bead, typically made of copper or brass, is placed at the front of the fly. The bead serves multiple purposes: it adds weight to the fly, allowing it to sink quickly to the desired depth, and it creates a subtle flash and attraction for fish.
Wire-Wrapped Body: The abdomen of the Copper John is made using copper wire. This wire is wrapped tightly around the hook shank in a segmented fashion, giving the fly a lifelike appearance. The wire can be either copper or a different color, depending on the variation of the Copper John being tied.
Tail: The fly typically features a tail made of pheasant tail fibers. This tail adds movement and natural appeal to the pattern.
Thorax: The thorax region of the Copper John is often created using peacock herl or a synthetic substitute. This material adds a bit of bulk and a shiny, attractive appearance to the fly.
Color Variations: The Copper John is available in various color combinations to mimic different insect species and stages. Common colors include copper (for general attractiveness), red, green, and black. These colors can be selected based on the prevalent aquatic insects in a particular fishing area.
Versatility: One of the main strengths of the Copper John is its adaptability. Anglers can adjust the size and color of the fly to match the specific insect hatch or fishing conditions they encounter. This versatility has contributed to its popularity.
Nymphing Fly: The Beadhead Copper John is primarily used as a nymphing fly, meaning it’s meant to be fished underwater to imitate the juvenile stage of aquatic insects. It can be used with various nymphing techniques, such as indicator nymphing or Euro nymphing, depending on angler preferences and the water being fished.
Effective Year-Round: This fly is productive throughout the year, as it imitates a wide range of aquatic insects that are important food sources for trout and other fish species. It can be especially effective during mayfly and stonefly hatches.

In summary, the BH Copper John is a highly effective and adaptable fly pattern that has earned a place in the fly boxes of many anglers. Its beadhead, wire-wrapped body, and color variations make it a versatile choice for targeting trout and other freshwater species in a variety of fishing conditions.
